Autumnal Recollections ...
With Our Friend Paul
BC Space is pleased and proud to announce a very special exhibition to run through December 21, 2013, the Winter Solstice.
Autumnal Recollections ... With Our Friend Paul features the work of long time Laguna resident art guru Paul Darrow. The exhibition presents a vast overview of work by this extraordinary 92 year-old, still-working artist, educator, and philosopher.
Paul Darrow, a longtime Laguna Beach resident and professor emeritus of Scripps College, is known for his talent as a painter, assemblage artist, photographer, cartoonist, sailor, musician, as well as for his great wit. As a teacher, he has inspired many, and his students still visit - often bearing gifts. His children and grandchildren are artists as well, including Chris and Bryce, musicians, and Eric, a potter. He is the proud head of this eclectic clan that has inherited the Darrow gifts. As a cartoonist for the Claremont (CA) Courier, he has contributed two
cartoons a week for more than 50 years.
As a fine artist, he has had numerous one-person exhibitions over the years, including the recent show in Memorial Park in Claremont. He was included in Getty Foundation sponsored 2011-2012 Pacific Standard Time exhibitions at the Pasadena Museum of California Art and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Paul's artwork is often abstract. Based in experimentation and Buddhism, he discovers the profound in detritus, the clarity in the deliberately obscure, and the complex truth in simplicity. Using a variety of materials and techniques, he juxtaposes seemingly unrelated objects to create new meanings, often surprising us with changes of scale, and just plain making art in the spirit of play, as he has for over 70 years.
